Jesus, Superhero

In him there was life, and that life was the light of men. And the light shines in darkness, a darkness which was not able to master it. (Jn 1:5-6 KNOX)

You can’t turn God’s light off.

You can cover it up. You can close your eyes and pretend it’s not there. You can even change rooms and walk around in the dark if you want to. (Mt 5:15;Mk 4:21;Lk 8:16;Lk 11:33;Jn 3:19;Jn 8:12;Rm 3:12)

But no amount of effort on your part will put the Light out. The devil tried more than once, but the Light only became brighter.

He wanted to kill infant Jesus, but God sent Mary and Joseph into Egypt. (Mt 2:19-21)

He wanted to toss Jesus off a cliff at the hands of irate men, but Jesus walked right through them like they weren’t there. (Lk 4:30)

He couldn’t, in fact, touch Jesus until the Savior surrendered Himself, and even then, even after the nails, the beatings, the crown of thorns. Even after a sword pierced His side and His body was wrapped and placed in a tomb, even after He wasn’t moving, His heart wasn’t beating, His flesh was cold, blue, stiff – even then, the Light kept shining. (Jn 10:15,17)

Unquenchable, unchangeable, unstoppable. Unsatisfied with darkness. Unhappy with the state of things, the Light changed them, it breathed Life and next thing anyone knew, there’s Jesus again, only better.

Jesus 2.0.
Jesus, the Enhanced Version.
Jesus, Superhero.

Stronger than disease, illness, deformity, or mental distress.
Greater than fear or dread or guilt or regret.
Able to clean souls with a single word.
Passing out forgiveness to anyone who’ll ask and believe for it.

But He didn’t stop there. He shared that power with us, those who didn’t deserve it. He said, “You go and do what I did … and do greater things!” (Jn 14:12)

Greater than raising Lazarus from the dead?
Greater than walking on water? Healing the lame? Cleansing a leper?

Greater than taking on the worst of the worst of the worst of mankind and exchanging your life for theirs?

We’re not living up to our full potential, folks. We’re settling for half-baked, half-best, half-as-good lives, worrying about the news, the government, the food supply when the God we serve already took care of all that. He was there at the beginning, and He planned the ending.

No namby-pamby ending either. Oh, no. He’s going to do it right, come back in spectacular style and every eye’s going to see him and know. (Rev 1:7)

God wins.

EIGHT TO ONE is a remake of a YA formerly released as a contemporary. As explained in the foreward of the book, I meant the story to be a historical originally and decided in recent days to return it to that. This novella includes a BONUS short story, "Sam" never before released.

Blurb:

A lifetime. How had the boy who pulled pranks become a man who talked about lifetimes?

-----

Sent south for the summer, eighteen-year-old Iris Willow expects the next three months to be the worst. After all, there can’t be anything interesting about eight brothers raised on a small-town farm. Not when she’s met more sophisticated boys in the city.

Yet from the start, the second eldest, Lucas McGilley, seems different. He’s handsome and funny and kind. He’s dedicated to his family and willing to do what’s necessary to make up for his past mistakes. Most of all, he says he’s in love with her.

Love that, as the summer ends, can’t overcome her world of doubts. Or his older brother’s hatred. Or the horrible secret held by his mother.

Bonus Story Blurb:

Samuel McGilley, as the youngest of eight brothers, often finds himself overlooked. He’s always made up for that by speaking his mind. But when an afternoon’s task for a local widow introduces him to pretty little Anna McIntosh, he finds something he’s good at. Listening.

And maybe, with time’s passing, something far more priceless. Love.

Every Sin

I was amazed recently by online comments from "Christians" advocating sins Jesus spoke clearly against. They justified it, talking about the struggle of a friend or relative or church member in that area in the guise of being tolerant. They said, as Christians we're to be non-judgmental and thereby show the love of Christ.

But it's one thing to love everyone and another to accept something that's blatantly wrong. A friend of mine made two statements about this that set me thinking.

She said:

"The struggle is true for some, but the majority aren't struggling at all, they're wallowing. There's a HUGE difference. God knows the heart." (Ps 44:21)

And:

"If everything's fine, then the only thing Jesus really died for is intolerance, right?"

Wow. Jesus died for SINS. Big sins. Small sins. Every sin. And sin will ALWAYS come between a person and Christ. It prevents answers to prayer, hinders physical and mental healing, and opens one's life to the work of Satan.

Don't get me wrong. People DO struggle, but people filling their hearts with Christ, people choosing real repentance, will ALWAYS find salvation and through it peace from whatever they're struggling against, else God is not strong and Jesus died in vain.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth (Rm 1:16).

But, like my friend said, most people aren't struggling, they're wallowing. Filled with self-pity and unwilling to change, they seek an excuse for their sin. They want to partake, yet not reap the consequences. Greater, they search for forgiveness from society, instead of God, to make it "okay."

Yet, it isn't okay. Every sin ... including those society has renamed ... was nailed to the cross FOR A REASON. And either the cross and the power of the Resurrection were sufficient to deliver man, or Jesus died solely for intolerance. (Php 3:10)

Because everything else is perfectly acceptable. Right?

I think not. Sin cannot be redefined, and nothing man can do will cleanse him of it. But one dip in the fountain of Jesus's blood, with eyes turned toward God for cleansing and forgiveness, and God will remove EVERY sin and the effects of it. (Is 1:18;Jn 7:18;Rm 1:18;Heb 12:1)

That's the way grace works. (2Co 12:9)

God didn't do things halfway. He didn't hang on the cross for some people and not others. There's no clause in the will amending the purpose of His death, given it grows "out of date". And He isn't less powerful now because ten people on Facebook all agree on it. (Gal 3:28;Col 3:11)

He never changes. NEVER. And never is a really long time. (Mal 3:6)

-----

Michael O’Fallen, son of the Man with the Golden Voice, has always been told by others that his singing was better than his father’s. Yet so far in his young life, his father hasn’t acknowledged it.

His love life, too, seems to be falling short. Jenny Finnegan, who he’s loved for years, won’t give him the time of day.

Then an offer comes to perform in a series of concerts across the nation, and he knows it’s his time for greatness. But rash actions done in the dead of night have far-reaching consequences that, when seen in the light, might destroy the very man who’s given him the most – his father.

Blurb:

It’d seemed so easy when she’d planned this. She’d hire a boyfriend, make sure he understood the story she’d concocted, and they’d pretend to be a couple for two weeks. Nothing could go wrong with that as long as they had a mutual understanding first.

-----

Carley Schaeffer ran from home at age nineteen, trying to escape a bad memory. Now twenty-four, she’s returning for Christmas. But there’s a problem. She’s spent all that time creating a boyfriend who doesn’t exist.

He’s perfect, successful, smart, and kind. He’s also sexy, with a heart-stopping smile and two sky-blue eyes. But maybe she’s over-dramatized him a bit. Because now, her mom wants to meet him. Not possible.

Or is it? She could hire someone. One fake boyfriend to smile and act real for two weeks, a couple gifts she’s purchased in advance, and she’ll make it through Christmas with her lie intact. Except, she didn’t count on her imposter being Brice Vaneck or a miracle changing her heart.

A fun and touching Christmas novella sharing the romance of the season.

Blurb:
But they didn’t know that what was on the outside wasn’t near as important as what was in the heart. Arsen’s heart was a dozen shades of gray, all murky and opaque. Toby’s … I suspect he thought it’d faded black, that he had no redeeming qualities left. But to me, he looked more and more like gold, like the sunset one of those nights where it’s all around you. You can’t escape it, but only stand there in the glow. For me, he was that glow, and I made up my mind to bask in it whenever I could.

-----

Caia Maceo’s life changed the day Toby Kemp walked into it. He’s different from other boys, silent, secretive.

But, their feelings for each other growing, she finds out there’s a reason he acts that way. He’s lived through something no teen should have to face. He’s seen hell and survived.

Yet, it isn’t his vision of hell that makes her question their relationship, but an unexpected view of heaven.

A look at life and death and faith from a unique point-of-view. Book 1 of 2 in the ANGST SERIES by best-selling author, SUZANNE D. WILLIAMS.

First Response, Mercy

And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. (Lk 23:39-43)

Jesus, when faced with the thief on the cross at his side, chose to give mercy. This is always God’s preferred path. In fact, the Scripture in Micah 7:18 says that He “delights in mercy.” That’s pretty powerful. Something you delight in, gives you pleasure. It’s a thing you choose over all your other options.

We see another example of this in a story Jesus told. His disciple, Peter, asked how many times he should forgive someone, and in response, Jesus spoke about a man deep in debt. The king, who the man owed the debt to, at first, commanded judgment, saying the man’s wife and children should be sold. But when the man begged for mercy, it was granted and the debt completely forgiven.

However, here’s the important part we should note … The man then found someone who owed him money. Yet, instead of applying the same mercy he’d been given, he chose to offer judgment. He not only didn’t forgive the debt, he had the man cast in prison. (Mt 18:21-35)

Now, sin, as the Bible speaks of it, cannot be redefined. What was wrong then is still wrong today, no matter who says otherwise. And the sinner needs to acknowledge his sin in order to offer true repentance. However, we in the church have spent way too much time defining sin and not enough offering mercy. We’ve become like the man who owed the debt. We ask for forgiveness for ourselves, but don’t offer it to others.

Here’s the truth God spoke to my heart. He said:  “I don’t tolerate sin. I forgive it.”

This revelation changed me. In it, I saw all the times I ever condemned someone else for their behavior, all the harsh, unkind words I’ve spoken, all the times I should have done like Jesus and preferred mercy.

I was the man in Psalm 1:1 who sat in the seat of the scornful, my gut reaction to speak out harsh words. But God, without redefining the sin, always has the opposite reaction. He sees a chance to forgive and jumps on it. God’s automatic reaction to sin, His first response, is always mercy.

But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.  (Ps 86:15)

The fact is, judgment is easier to dispense. It’s almost more natural for the human mind. But it isn’t God’s way because God’s mercy always outweighs His judgment. It’s a size issue. Mercy is huge, far larger than we’ve imagined. The Bible says, “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.” (Ps 103:12) That’s GREAT mercy!

But, we’ve made judgment larger. Judgment is like that item in the back of your pantry, the one you avoid until there’s nothing else in the house to eat. God would much rather do anything else than dispense judgment. It’s His last resort. And He’s asked us to do the same. In fact:

Mercy triumphs over judgment. (Jas 2:13 GNB)

When we give mercy, we receive mercy. Similarly, the size of the judgment we dispense is the judgment we’ll receive. Even greater, the Bible says to stand in judgment instead of mercy is inexcusable. (Mt 5:7;Mt 7:2;Rm 2:1)

But, oh, how great is God’s forgiveness! That God, who is rich in mercy, even when we were full of our sins, chose mercy and grace, not condemning us for our faults, but blessing instead. It’s our job to do the same. We don’t excuse the sin, but we don’t condemn the sinner either. And God’s mercy in us becomes greater than anything else. (Eph 2:4-6;Rm 8:1)

Blurb:

He’s not that man. He’s not him. She told herself over and over. She would convince herself of it. What she had with Gerritt was greater than that; it was dynamic, driving, and compelling. She couldn’t stop the words from leaving her lips though she knew he wouldn’t return them. “I love you, Gerritt Finnegan,” she said. With all her heart. With everything in her. He was the man she wanted, the husband of her dreams.

He kissed her forehead. “I know you do, Maire.”

-----

Maire O’Fallen, daughter of famous Irish tenor, Michael O’Fallen, has lived a life of privilege, shielded by her extended family and her father’s loving hand. Then one horrible night strips it all away.

The victim of rape, she turns to Gerritt Finnegan, the boy she’s always loved, to drive the demons in her mind away. And he steps up, keeping her secret, eventually offering his hand in marriage.

But their marriage is built on sand, which time, circumstance, and one final twist of fate threaten to destroy all together.

A powerful story of personal and marital recovery from a horrible crime by best-selling author, SUZANNE D. WILLIAMS. Book 4 of The Florida Irish series.

God In Us

(Proverbs 23:26)  My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

There is an old adage, “Give him an inch, and he’ll take a mile.” I want you to take this thought and instead of pointing it at someone else, apply it to yourself. Yet not, are you “taking a mile,” but instead, are you “giving an inch”? In particular, where children are concerned.

We are the example for the younger generation, and we’ve been lax as adults, both on the whole and as parents specifically, to do and say the right things. Shame on us! If we give an inch, they don’t know better but to take a mile.

As example, I watched a television program over the weekend that takes a group of troubled teens, some as young as twelve, into the jail system and shows them what it’ll be like to be incarcerated. One boy in particular tugged at my heart. He was living with his grandmother, both parents being out of the picture, and had six sisters, all with different fathers. Now, I don’t know more of their story than that, but could not help but think, “No wonder he’s so confused.”

God loves everyone, regardless of race or gender or ethnicity. His forgiveness is for any who seek it and free of charge to whoever asks. He loves that boy as much as He loves that boy’s parents and siblings. But somewhere in his life, someone dropped the ball and didn’t provide him with the stable, godly example he needed.

Our children’s failures are our fault. If we don’t make the point of dotting all the i’s and crossing all the t’s where their lives are considered, the inch we leave will become a gulf they can’t cross. We as Christians are also to blame. We haven’t stood up for godly principles, said, “This is right, and that is wrong,” through our neglect, leaving our young ones to draw their own conclusions.

Our job, and a sign of our love, is to give, not condemnation, but discipline and correction. This is scriptural:  For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth. (Pr 4:12)

Too many parents don’t want to “get onto” their son or daughter out of their own discomfort or embarrassment. But our discomfort and embarrassment will eventually become far more than we can handle. We must talk about the issues prevalent in our world and outline for our children what God says on the matter - definitively. We provide the guidelines.

Because when all is said and done, children obey their parents when they find in them who they want to become. Not as robots or replicas, but individuals with consciences created by loving hands. Tenderhearted, willing to learn, and dedicated to what mom and dad said … not because of who we are, but because of who God is in us.

I have revised and updated an older novella, NOT DONE LIVING, and created a historical version as well. Both stories are on sale for 99cents. They are, in essence, the same storyline set in different eras. It was a fun project I may do again with other stories.

Off Site:

I had two fun interviews online this week. Visit Carol Moye's blog and read a bit about who I am and why I write.  Also, I had a nice chat with Sylvia Frances about my latest projects. Over on the GNFA blog, I discuss more about TAKE MY BREATH AWAY.

Writing News:

I am primarily working on the 4th book in The Billionaire Boys Club series, CRISTOBEL. I am hoping to finish and have it released in October. In this excerpt, Cristobel Wolfe, the younger brother of Paxton Wolfe (Book 3) meets a troubled young woman named Marina.

Excerpt:

Marina Allenoy was very pretty, slim, petite, with silky brown hair cut shoulder length. He’d seen pretty women before, of course, but none that he was attracted to quite so much, and he wondered how much of that was because of how fragile she seemed. She’d driven into the lot rather hasty, sliding to a frantic halt. That had brought him to the front where the next thing he noticed was her pale complexion and large fear-filled eyes.

Something was clearly wrong, but what, he’d yet to figure out. Perhaps, it was a simple as her not feeling well like she’d implied. She seemed guarded, too, but again, that could be because they didn’t know one another.

“Will you come?” he asked again. He wanted her to come. A smile on her face would change it completely and, the act of painting, provide a distraction to whatever bothered her.

“I … I will. When do you think … you’ll have it open?”

“It’ll be several weeks yet, but if you like I can call you.”

Her expression shaded, reluctance returning. He hurried to comfort her. “Or you can call me. Here …” He rose from the chair and wandered to the counter. Digging beneath it, he scrawled his number and extended it to her. “That’s my private number. Call it anytime.”

She folded her lip between her teeth, her hand never leaving her lap.

“Please.” He stretched it out further.

She accepted at last, curling the paper in her palm. Her face flushed, she rose. “I … should go. I was headed to the store, and at this rate, will never get there.”

He smiled and walked her to the door, holding it open for her to exit, then rushing past her, opened her car door as well.

She paused without sitting and turned. She said nothing, but it was more what she wanted to say, and that he read very well. A smile flickered and she dipped her gaze. He finally reversed. She was gone minutes later. Expelling a sigh, he returned inside, dejected.

Writing News:

I will be doing another email subscriber only giveaway in the near future. Tell your friends, have them subscribe, and look for the book information and the giveaway date within a short time.

I have finally taken the time to break the 3 books included in the ME & TIMOTHY COOPER paperback into 3 separate books. You will now be able to purchase the story that matches, I KISSED THE BOY NEXT DOOR and THE BEST WEEK OF MY LIFE as their own paperbacks. Look for the sale links under "Amazon" for each book on the blog's catalog page. Books should be online within a few days.

Today's excerpt is another portion from my new release, TAKE MY BREATH AWAY, now available for purchase. In this scene, Troy and Hannah have their first, somewhat unsettling, meeting.

Excerpt:
He was taller than she expected, once up close, perhaps six-foot-one or so, and imposing. She put that down to his apparent unhappiness and therefore, partially dreaded what she had to say.

“Troy Lansing. Maura said you wanted to speak with me?”

He talked deep, like he sang, harmonic, almost.

Hannah stood to her feet, her nerves taking hold. “Yeah … I’m sorry to tell you this, but I … I had an accident. Outside?” She paused to inhale.

Why did this boy make her so nervous?

“My tire blew, not sure why, but I … I lost control and ran into a green pickup?” This last bit squeaked out too high-pitched, and embarrassment swamped her. She could, at least, sound confident and mature, not like a fifteen-year-old.

“You hit my truck?” He scowled, thick brows forming a line.

Hannah gulped, her throat dry. “I … guess? I’m really sorry. My dad …”

He blew out a breath, waving one arm outward. “Great. That’s all I need … for some … tourist … to come prancing in here …”

“Tourist?” Her anger sparked. “I admit I’ve never been here before, but …”

“There you go then,” he said.

Sunday Photographs

Water, water everywhere ... or so the poem goes. It rains, then rains, then rains again here. We are fortunate to not have to deal with flooding like some, but you do forget what the sun looks like.

My first offering is actually a video. A family of three Sandhill Cranes - Mom, Pop, and this year's Baby - were in the left-hand cowfield. A single bachelor male was in the field to the right. The two males were not getting along and so calling back and forth.

Enjoy the rest of the photos.

Writing News:

Zip on over to the GNFA blog and check out my recent post, THINGS I LEARNED WRITING, and learn 3 good writing tips.

My upcoming novel, CLARA, has been put on hold. The storyline went south on me, so I'm rethinking things. As in all things writing, sometimes plots have to be reconsidered. I promise it'll come out the other end even better. I just can't say when that'll be.

I also have two YA series upcoming. Book 1 of both series is almost completed.

I have an exciting book in the planning stages, JOE, Book 1 of a series. I won't say what the exact storyline is right now, but I will give you a look at the cover. This will be a new twist on an old tale.

Today's except is from my next book to be released a Young Adult Romantic Suspense, the first of that genre I've written. It is in the editing stages.

Blurb:
This time she felt it, the luxury of his voice suffusing her chest, and the sound combined with the warmth of his arms, the pointed pressure of his chin on the top of her head, served to romance her.

She’d fall hard and fast for him if she’d let it. But the pain of her mom’s betrayal and what still lay unsaid with her dad stopped her, and instead, she teetered on the edge, her mind warring with the daydream spun around her.

-----

Her mom and dad’s divorce, although it was years ago, still causes friction in nineteen-year-old Hannah Giselle’s life, friction she hopes two weeks alone with her dad in the northern California mountains will help begin to heal.

But her mom’s resentment seems to follow her there, taking a firm grip in the secrets which soon come to light. Her dad had a fiancĂ©e she knew nothing about, a lovely woman whose unresolved disappearance quickly turns her already troubled world upside down.

She finds comfort in the arms of handsome local, Troy Lansing. He’s stronger than he knows and, despite his personal doubts, the steady hand she needs. Especially when yet one more revelation tears her life apart.

I Am Me

I want to believe in something greater
--but according to society, I can't.

I want to trust in someone stronger
--but I'm told that doesn't exist. God is a myth.

I want to wake up knowing the Creator of the world made me exactly how He wanted
--but, no, it isn't. Could be ... Maybe ... I can change myself at whim.

I'm taught tolerance
--when that same tolerance goes against the very thing generations of my family believed.

The words spoken from my mother and father, two sets of grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins. They taught me the power of worship, prayer on bended knee. That He always hears, always answers, always loves.

And I know it's true because I have felt His hand reach down and touch mine.

When I was at the bottom, He lifted me.
When I was confused about who I'd become, He taught me.

When I felt my daughter's life kicking in me, I had no doubt ... no doubt at all ... of who He is.

Still, they want to change me. They want me to become something I've never been. I must readjust, rethink, reform to their new rules.

But I submit that their words are opposite of His. That not everything goes, and some things are wrong. That there IS a line in the sand.

That the Truth is immoveable, unshakeable, unperturbed.
That God is more powerful than the men He created.
That He saw all this from the very beginning and knew ...

He KNEW ...

Exactly how it'd end.

That what I believe - in life, in hope, in forgiveness, in faith - isn't worth my compromise, and who I am today, who I need to be tomorrow, regardless of what anyone else has to say, more important than public opinion.

Because I am me.
And I am His.
And I won't change that.

The weather is h-o-t, with temperatures in the mid-90s every day. This causes it to rain a lot, which then prevents mowing the grass. (We have over an acre to mow.)

Additional confession, these photos were all with my cell phone. I haven't picked the Nikon up in two weeks. Sad! But the cell is easier to use and hooked to social networks, so I tend to not bother to go get the Nikon. Laziness.

Today's excerpt comes from a Romantic Suspense entitled, REASON TO LIVE. Close friends, Brice Monahan and Christy Wasner are on a day trip mountain climbing in the New Mexican desert when they come across the body of a boy she recognizes.

I look forward to writing the end of this tale!

Excerpt:
Christy Wasner sailed down into the ravine, the sing of the rope, heat of the desert sun, and persistent ache in her muscles combining with a good dose of adrenaline to give her a head rush. Her head cast back, she glanced upward long enough to see the ever-shrinking face of her partner, climbing instructor, Brice Monahan.

She and Brice went back two years to a chance meeting at a coffee shop on Third Street. He was the buff dude about to burst the seams of his t-shirt, and her, the flirt, determined to get in his pants. Since then, he’d succeeded and she’d failed. He was glorious, too, minus the shirt, which he was all too willing to remove, but incredibly abstinent when it came to relationships, a fact that had, initially, made her question if he was gay.

He wasn’t.

Turning her gaze outward, she concentrated on her rate of speed, slowing toward the bottom to lessen the impact on her legs. Her feet on solid ground, she unclamped herself from the rope and reversed, looking up again to watch Brice descend.

Despite his lack of any interest in her as a bedmate, he’d proven to be a good friend and treated her like a lady, which she discovered was extremely rare. He’d also introduced her to mountain climbing. He always said she was a natural. She doubted that, adding the compliment to the list of others he regularly tossed her way. Maybe he wasn’t any good for angst release, but he built her ego.

He loomed into view, his well-cut chest and muscular arms becoming more impressive the closer he came. By the time he’d unhooked, she’d broken a sweat, one unrelated to the desert heat.

“Stop gawking,” he said. “You’ve seen it all before.”

“And I’m still impressed.”

Brice grinned, rolling up a length of rope in his right hand. “Here’s where you offer to feel me up before we go on.”

She laughed once. “I’m not sure which is larger, your self-image or mine.” Turning away from him, she scanned the shaded bottom of the ravine. “I’m glad you talked me into this. It’s lovely.”

The red rock walls and sprinkling of cactus and sage was simplistic beauty hiding foreboding dangers, rattlesnakes and scorpions, to name two, as well as dehydration, a perhaps greater threat.
She never tired of seeing the desert landscape though, but had resisted going quite as far as they had today, time and fear outweighing the effort.

“I was wrong,” she continued.

Brice cupped one hand over his ear. “What’s that? Did I hear …?”

She smiled at him. “I … was … wrong …” she repeated slowly. “Though … that rest you promised me sounds inviting.”

He inclined his head toward the left. “We’ll do that over there. I’m up for fifteen myself.”

Fifteen. She’d be lucky to get five. Brice was always pushing them forward. One mile wasn’t enough, they had to go two … or twelve. So what, the drop was two hundred feet, she was fully capable of doing it, he’d say.

Her shoes crunching over loose rock, Christy paced herself at his side, relieved to see a small stream not too far ahead. She shucked her pack, falling down on her knees to cup the water in her palm, but before she could bring it to her lips, Brice tapped her on the head.

“Don’t drink that.”

She let the water slid through her fingers. “Don’t? Why?”

“Because I’ll be scraping you off the ground,” he said, “and I know I’m tough, but toting you out of the ravine on my back isn’t my idea of fun.”

Christy fell onto her haunches. “But you said …”

“I said we’d rest, not drink the water.” Brice dropped his pack beside hers and took a seat on it. Unzipping one end, he pulled out a water bottle and handed it her way.

She took a long swig. In handing it back to him, she was overcome again by how great he was – tight abs, beefy thighs.

His sly grin returned.

“I know why you keep taking me out here,” she said in response, “because I’m such a sucker for your good looks.”

“It’s mutual,” he replied.

She started and must’ve showed her surprise clearly because he laughed. “You think I’m blind?”

“Well … no … but you made it clear you weren’t interested.”

His brow wrinkled. “Is that what you think? I never said I wasn’t interested. I said I wasn’t hopping in the sack, and I’m not. But I do have eyes, and we’ve spent how much time together?”

“A lot,” she replied, “but I figured … you know … we’re just friends, and I don’t want to mess that up.”

His expression was as serious as she’d ever seen him. Brice was, in general, very lighthearted. He enjoyed a good laugh, loved to dance, and was a good cook. She went to his place at least every other weekend for him to fix dinner. They’d gone out to several clubs he liked on many occasions, and she’d been considered his “date” by others in their group. But she’d never ranked herself any higher than a friend.

He reached out one hand and took hold of her chin. The calluses in his palm rasped hard on her skin, but she made no effort to dislodge him. He seemed to consider his next action, then dipped his head and kissed her. It was slight, the barest brush, but his breath was warm and moist, his mouth inviting.

He reversed, his brow drawing tight. “That tell you something?” he asked.

She nodded, her throat thick.

He held her there a moment longer then pushed to his feet. “I’m going to find a rock.” He was out of view seconds later.

She mashed two fingers to her lips, the saltiness of his skin finding the tip of her tongue. Restless, she rose, needing to soak in the moment, and followed the curve of the stream to where it rounded a boulder. One hand on the sun-warmed rock, she paused to check for snakes, and looking at the bottom where the rock met the soil, her gaze crossed an odd shape.

Her thoughts of Brice fell away as, with her fingertips, she dusted the sand from around the toe of what turned out to be a shoe. A shoe? Her eyes traveled upwards over undone laces to an ankle and a leg, the skin tinged blue. Stumbling backward, the heel of her hiking boot caught in the gravel, and she tumbled downward with a squeak.

Brice appeared out of nowhere, his sweaty, dark hair sticking up at odd angles. “What is it? You okay?”

Hands shaking, she pointed, quivering, at the boulder, and he crept ahead, coming to a halt at the exposed shoe.

“It’s a boy,” he said, “maybe fifteen.” His fingers curling into fists, he pressed closer and a tremor seemed to snake down his spine. “Christy … can you … come here?”

“Come … come there? I can’t. We … should go. Get help.”

“Please?” Brice pleaded, his voice desperate.

Worried, she pushed to her feet, brushing sand from her backside. She made no effort to move, however.

“Christy …” Brice called again. He sounded even worse now.

Her heart pounding, pulse swishing in her ears, she forced herself toward him one step at a time and rounding his side, spotted the boy’s face and knew instantly what was wrong.

“It’s Enrique,” she said.

Enrique Sandoval, the oldest son of her next-door neighbor.

The weather is HOT, in the 90s during the day, and rainy in the afternoons. The rain is good because this heat kills plant life within days.

Bit of a story with the hummingbird pic. My husband was walking past one of our flowerbeds and heard a buzzing noise. He looks down and finds this male ruby throat trapped in the leaves of an Iris. No reason for the bird to be there, except maybe he got in a fight with another hummer and was knocked there. They are fierce little birds and very territorial. In any case, he was released in good shape.

Enjoy!

What's on Tap:

Having finished writing Book 3 of the Billionaire Boys Club series, WOLFE, I've moved on to Book 3 of the Rodeo Girl series, RACIN' HEARTS. I plan to release this August 1st, unless there's an unforeseen delay. Look for it as a preorder in July. I am also closing in on the ending of WINGS2 (Paranormal Romance) Book 2. This will make up today's excerpt.

Angus Finlay has always had a rocky relationship with his stepdad. In book 2 of the WINGS series, three years have passed, his relationship with Sara has fallen apart, and Angus has a new girlfriend, not walking in the Light, who has no clue who he really is.

Excerpt:
From the window seat of the airplane, Angus had a good view of both the passengers and the early morning sky. However, his thoughts inward, his mind flew a thousand miles away to a small house and a family he’d spent two years with.

The Benedicts had been kind, taken him in when he had nowhere else to go, celebrated holidays, birthdays, together. They’d fed him, prayed with him and for him, and most of all, trusted him with their daughter. How young and stupid and green he’d been, thinking that life could go on pristine as it had … every morning a glorious display of the Creator’s awe-inspiring power, visions and dreams and, always, Sara knowing things no one else did.

Cindy’s gaze rested on him hard. One hand curved over his arm, her forehead drawn upward, worry sat heavy on her features. “You never mention home,” she said.

He sighed, long. They’d talked about many things since they’d started dating, most of them having to deal with her. That’d felt one-sided, but she hadn’t seemed to mind; and truth was, he’d preferred it. Last thing he’d wanted to explain was his convoluted past.

Only now, she’d agreed to come on what wouldn’t be an easy trip and he ought trust her a little more. His energy seemed to drain at the thought. “My dad died,” he said.

She pillowed her cheek on his arm. “How old were you?”

“Seven. But he’d left us long before then and married someone else.”

“Oh, that’s rough.”

It had been … then … but now it was strangely … normal. Lots of kids, he’d discovered, had broken homes. He couldn’t pity himself over that.

“My mom remarried. The guy’s a drunk.”

“And … and the cops say he killed her?” Hesitant, her voice quivered.

Angus directed his eyes to her face, apologetic. “I shouldn’t have asked you to do this, should handle it myself. I’m grateful you came.”

Cindy offered a hopeful smile. “I didn’t want you to go alone.”

He bit his lip, thoughts of Sara rising again. “I have to warn you … my old girlfriend …”

Cindy laughed once. “I can handle the ex.”

But, no, she couldn’t, and he’d be as good as flaunting their relationship in front of her, which would only make things hard for Sara. He paused.

Hard for Sara? Why was he concerned about that?

“Just thought I should put it out there. She’ll be around, not that she’ll say or do anything awful. That’s not her style. But she knows things …”

“All she needs to know is Angus Finlay is mine and we’ll be okay.”

But Angus didn’t know whose he was anymore. He used to. He’d belonged to the Creator, had His calling on his heart. He’d been baptized, heard angels singing, and witnessed the Power of the Resurrection shining all around him. He’d spoken to the Man, the Savior of the world, seen the holes in his hands. None of that had gone away though, had it? Surely, it still existed.

Yet the good he’d seen mingled now with the hatred of his stepdad, his new intimate relationship with Cindy, and the arguments he’d had with Sara.

Don’t quote Scriptures to me. I know what the Book says well enough.

Well enough? We’re to be filled continually.

There you go again. You use it like a weapon anymore. Wasn’t “you and me” supposed to teach you to submit?

She’d glared at him then, and he’d known the statement wasn’t fair. He shouldn’t use the Creator’s words as a weapon against her any more than she should. The Creator wasn’t the author of confusion or strife. (1Co 14:33)

“Tell me about your mom,” Cindy said.

Grateful for the distraction, Angus tried to relax. “She’s my biggest fan.” This brought a smile to his face, one tinged with sadness. “She always loved my dad.”

“You said she remarried.”

He nodded. “For security. She hated being alone. It was a mistake from the start, and as he got more abusive, I begged her to leave. She only stood up to him once.”

Once. But that hadn’t lasted. She’d meant well, but she’d given in, inch by inch. Exactly as he had. It was so much easier to give in than to stand strong, mostly because you didn’t see it coming. You bowed here, stooped a little over there, and before you knew it were way off track. Admitting it had come too hard and fixing his relationship with Sara, impossible.

Turning his gaze, he kissed Cindy tenderly then glanced out the window of the plane.

“We’ll get through this,” she said in his ear.

He didn’t look at her, couldn’t look at her, for the sudden vision of Sara staring him in the face.

A World Of Flaws

We live in a world where people have flaws, where mistakes are made and feelings are hurt. The hardest part of our day is learning to pass them by.

We're told to forgive, but I've discovered that it's much easier to say than it is to actually do. It's even harder to walk upright and not step on people's toes to start with.

We give judgment, plucking the toothpick from our neighbor's ... relative's ... spouse's ... eye, all the while adjusting the telephone pole in our own. (Mt 7:3) Worse, we want people to SEE the telephone pole and embrace it. It becomes a badge of honor.

We're different, special, because of what's happened to us.

If you enjoy looking at each other's scars, you need prayer. - Jesse Duplantis

But the Scripture is clear. We must crucify our flesh and turn our words toward exhortation. (Gal 5:24) Our job as Christ's followers is to build each other up and that begins with our words.

But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. (Heb 3:3)

I loved the meme at the top of this blog. I've read it and re-read it because I can see my flaws sharper every time I do, and as a result, I've pledged to try harder to do all those things, to think of people I deal with everyday in the light of God's Word and not the self-centered cloud I often wrap around me.

It's increased my desire to be more like Christ, to be willing to lay down my life for those around me, and not just for myself. It's a lofty goal. I know that, and I may not completely accomplish it in my lifetime. But I'll never know if I don't try, and somehow, I think, what little progress I make will make a huge difference in how others see me.

That will make my efforts worth it.

What's on tap:

First, wander on over to the GNFA blog and read my interview of author, Dana Pratola, about her new book, VOICE OF TRUTH.

Also, in response to the inquiries I've had lately about WINGS2, let me say publicly, I'm not sure when the book will be completed, but it WILL be completed. After some struggling with the storyline, I had a mental breakthrough and am assiduously working on it.

To peak your curiosity further, it does, in fact, tell the story of Angus's stepfather, but not in the way I'd planned at all. I'm as surprised as you will be by the storyline. Angus has grown up and he and Sara have separated. But God has plans for them both.

Also, RACIN' HEARTS (Rodeo Girl Series) Book 3, will be released sometime in August, for those who've asked.

But the biggest news of all is also today's book cover release - WOLFE (Billionaire Boys Club) Book 3 is nearing completion. And here's something exciting, there's a Book 4. You'll have to wait for Book 3 to find out more about who's up next.

Here's the new Paxton Wolfe.

Blurb:

For a moment, she thought she’d dreamed of their lovemaking, but, the minutes passing, knew she hadn’t and wept for the craving that now captured her soul.

She’d needed him before for all the wrong reasons. She needed him now for only one – she loved him.

-----

Billionaire bachelor, Paxton Wolfe, has everything money can buy and an aristocratic ancestry people respect. Good friends and business partners with Atlas Bellamy and Calix Steele, he’s set to become the face behind their newest, successful venture, a cruise line.

However, behind the walls of his eccentric mansion, a troubled childhood and failed engagement have hardened him. People are there to be used. He’ll take what he wants and never let heartache strike again.

Lovely songstress, Isobel Harding, is no exception to the rule. In her, his lust knows no bounds. But their toxic relationship exacts a high cost, and what he now wants the most might be lost forever.

Book 3 in the Billionaire Boys Club series by SUZANNE D. WILLIAMS.
