For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (2 Ti 1:8)
There are three things you need to overcome fear:
1. God's power.
2. God's love
3. God's Word.
Tapping into the power of God is vital to overcoming fear.
"How do I do that?" you ask.
The biggest way is through prayer, especially praying in the Spirit. The Word of God says, "But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost." (Jude 1:20)
Time spent praying in the Spirit will strengthen you inside. It's a direct communication with God in which He can pour into your heart His power and anointing.
To overcome fear, you have to really know ... I mean, REALLY REALLY know how much God loves you.
It's not enough to say, "Jesus died for me." Stop and put yourself in His place, realize what He suffered on your behalf. Then think about the Resurrection. Know that He overcame the power of the grave and sits at the right hand of the Father in heaven, victorious. (Col 3:1)
He did that all for YOU, for me, because He loved us so very, very much. (Jn 3:16)
SO much He's promised to never leave our side. NEVER.
Therefore, whatever you're going through, know God is there, and you're not alone. (Heb 13:5)
The hardest part of overcoming fear is changing your thinking. Fear becomes mind-consuming. It takes over your thoughts, growing to an immense, impossible proportion that you can't see around.
But that is a lie! God is bigger than fear!
Never, at any point in time, was God ever smaller or less or weaker than the fear the devil has tried to hold you back with.
Realizing that requires you changing your thought patterns, and this is done through time spent reading God's Word. Romans 12:2 says, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
Prove it to who? YOURSELF! When you're consumed by fear, you're the one who doesn't believe God is enough.
"Suzanne, that seems extreme."
That's the truth. Trust me, I've been there, and I know how hard it is to do the things you are afraid to do. But there isn't any way to walk around fear. You have to face it. But you do so with the Word of God in your heart, with the helmet of salvation on your heart, with the sword of the Spirit in your hand, and the shield of faith held outward to consume all the fiery darts of the enemy. (Eph 6:13-16)
That's what your spiritual armor is for! To combat the lies the devil throws at you.
When that thought comes again, that nauseous, horrible fearful lie, stand there and say, "No, devil. My God is bigger than this! He's higher! He's stronger! He's more than enough! I will not be afraid, but will go forth singing, with joy in my heart, knowing God cares for me, and I'm safe."
That's what God wants for all of us. To overcome fear, we simply need to believe it.
